Sunset: 5:02pm, January 13th I was actually on my way home when I noticed all the elements lining up for a dream shot. My gear was packed up, it was cold, windy, I didn't even have my cleats on for this shot as I had just abandoned my jeep on the side of the road and run down a snow and ice pack embankment chasing this light.Lighting
I preach to my students about "second sunset", this occurs once the sun has actually dipped below the horizon and starts to throw light at a different angle. With enough cloud cover you get an entirely new sequence of shots and this is what was happening as I put together this photograph.Equipment
As I mentioned above I was in a hurry to grab this shot, this image was taken with my trusty 7D, in my hand I have the 5D III. I am a big fan of a wider shot and I hit this one at 10mm and F4 if you can believe that. Naturally I was using my tripod, and I also had set a timer on the camera for 5 second intervals.Inspiration
The light. Years of experience with weather and light set off an alarm in my head to stop, pull over and run for the shot. My students get tired of hearing me say "Take the shot" and I will offer this up as an example, I was leaving for the day when the second sunset hit and I literally ran for the shot. Anyone can take a picture but when you see a "Photograph" setting up that allows you to capture the heart of a moment, absorbing years of experience, adventure, failure, triumph, excitement, the list goes on, and all in a single 1/250 of a second shot, this is where the inspiration comes from.Editing
It was a darker shot, lower aperture did help with the lighting, in post I increased the highlights a bit and opened up the shadows. In my camera bag
Canon EOS 5D Mark III with a EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens, also the with a Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM Lens, Canon 7D Mark II with an assortment of lenses, the 7D is my work horse camera for rough adventure shoots, absolutely love that camera !Feedback
The best advice I can offer is take the shot. Another piece of advice I offer students is "trust the lines of nature", you will not find a more accurate measuring device than learning to use landscape surrounding you.
