This photo was taken in a secluded beach in Wellington, New Zealand. My family and I decided to go for a drive one Sunday around Christmas time. We found this tiny beach and stopped to have a bite to eat and some coffee. We had brought our lunch with us and we were just generally relaxing and enjoying the sun and watching the boats moving their way around the waters. I think that there was even a luxury liner in the distance too.Time
This photo was taken around midday. A beautiful time of the day. Although it was a secluded bay, there was such a variety of activity going on.Lighting
It was a wonderfully sunny day. The day was bright and very sunny. Perfect conditions for taking action shots. I could take great photos of my daughters with some high rocks in the background. A great contrast. The waters were lovely and clear.Equipment
I have a Canon Rebel T3 EOS 1100D camera which I absolutely love. I was using my 75-300mm zomm lens.Inspiration
I was actually interested in an Oyster Catcher who was taking a bath in shallow waters and was trying to get as close to it without scaring it off, but my husband and daughters had noticed a small rock pool filled with water about 6 metres away from them and they had started to pick up small pebbles to throw at it to see if they could get them into the pool. It looked so effective ( and a lot of fun!) that I turned my camera to where the rock pool was and just took about 3-4 shots, no more than that, then promptly forgot about it as the Oyster Catcher was still bathing and there were boats and yachts to photograph too. It wasn't until I got home and had a look through my photos that I realised that I had taken quite a neat shot!Editing
The only post-processing I did was to crop the photo to centre it. I do try to keep my photos looking as natural as possible so have avoided using any post-processing software other than picasa. I am very much an enthusiastic but very amateur photographer.In my camera bag
Besides my Canon camera,I normally carry both my 75-300mm and my 18-55mm lenses. I always have a spare power pack and memory cards. Sometimes my Manfrotto tripod will come too, but I tend not to use it too much. I do a lot of sports photograph as my daughter plays club football and prefer to move around without it. I find that by the time I have set it up I have missed action shots.Feedback
My advice for anyone trying to capture anything similar is to be prepared for the unexpected! I don't tend to go looking for the unusual shot, but it somehow almost always finds me. I think in the case of the Rockpool photo, it was being in the right place and in the right zone. We sometimes don't always notice what's happening around us, especially when we are busy, and in a hurry, so it's good to just take a step back, relax, and soak in atmospheres. It's a cause and effect shot really. Pebbles were thrown in the rockpool and it caused a really good splash.
