Behind The Lens

Location

This photo taken was taken on a Photographic workshop showing the Kirkjufellsfoss (waterfall) on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula in Iceland. This iconic mountain and triple waterfall is located on the northwestern portion of the Island.

Time

The workshop group arrived on site at around 9 pm local time in early July and stayed on location for about 3 to 4 hours. Coming to Iceland at this time of year gives you very long (in duration) and spectacular sunrises and sunsets.

Lighting

The sun will start to set around 10 and will just dip below the horizon around midnight and will begin to rise around 2 am in the morning. So you are bless with an almost continuous low angle light golden hour light. When we arrived on location the mountain was covered in bright golden tones and over the course of a couple of hours the waterfall and rive valleys got pretty dark. I recognized in order to capture the high dynamic range of the image I would need set up for multiple bracketed images to create an HDR image.

Equipment

Some of the bracketed exposures required long shutter settings and so you needed a good tripod to hold the camera study in the low light portion of the images. The equipment and settings I used for this image was my Canon 5D mark3 with a 16 to 35 mm zoom lens. The camera was mounted on my gitzo tripod. The settings where ISO 100, focal length 22 mm and an aperture was f/18.

Inspiration

Every since I first saw images from this location I wanted to visit and photographic for myself. When you are physically there you are blown away at the scope and size of the landscape setting. The iconic Snaefellsnes mountain, the beautiful sky of the setting sun and the three beautiful waterfalls and rive valley. It is truly an inspiring location to visit and photograph.

Editing

The only thing special was working with the bracketed exposures to create a realistic looking HDR image. Using the HDR technique allowed me to capture the bright colors light in the setting sun with out blowing the highlights. You need to balance out the dark waterfall area and river valley to maintain good image quality and color.

In my camera bag

I usually carry 2 cameras (My Canon 5D mark 4 and my Canon 5D Mark 3). On this trip I had four lenses with me (16 to 33 mm), ( 24 to 70 mm), (100 to 400 mm) and (70 to 200 mm). I also have with me circular polarizers, and graduated ND filters. I use a gitzo carbon fiber tripod and a Really Right Stuff ball head.

Feedback

Just make sure any trip you plan includes a stop over on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula to visit this location. It is one of the more comic images you will capture from a trip to Iceland. I also suggest going around the time of the summer solstice when you will have long golden hour and sunset light to create truly beautiful images
