While stood outside my daughter's house this afternoon doing some weight training I watched a small skein of geese maybe 9 in a V formation fly straight across the face of the moon in the blue winter sky alas I had no camera at my side but I did consider the reasonable chance of another fly past so I brought my camera out on the off chance. I took a couple of quick shots to ascertain a ball park exposure value and left the camera sitting on the wall. Just before i completed my workout I saw an aeroplane heading South East quite high heading for likely warmer climes. I grabbed the camera in a last ditch attempt to create something meaningful today. Hand held at F-16 and 1-125th of a second it could be sharper, that will never be in doubt, I used a film speed of 400 to try and keep the shutter speed up but also the Aperture quite tight to enable enough depth of field for the aeroplane at about 16,000 feet and the moon at about 250000 miles to be identifiable next to each other. The lens used was a Canon 70mm - 200mm F-4 L I understand some of the other faster long zoom lenses are physically sharper but as primarily a landscape photographer especially one who often walks for many miles in search of THE image this lens suits my needs and is sharp enough. One point I would like to make at this point is that my sharpest lens by a very long margin is a Sigma and most of my lenses are Sigma, the Canon however has the fastest most accurate auto focus I have ever used and in this respect it far surpasses my other glass. In Lightroom I did tinker heavily with the tones of this image as you can tell but I feel the stark contrast help to make this image successful if not technically perfect. The camera used was a Canon EOS 550d hand held no filters.
