Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture from our deck in Saskatchewan. We had a massive Mountain Ash tree that they loved to pick clean of berries.

Time

This was taken in the early evening, early in the winter months.

Lighting

My husband had bought me a new Nikon and I was experimenting taking the shot through the window because if we sat outside the birds would fly away. I love the frosted appearance it gave the shot.

Equipment

This was shot with my Nikon D300, aperture f5.6, shutter 1/200, focal length 3600/10, ISO 400. Hand held no tripod.

Inspiration

I absolutely love the hoar frost that appears on cold Saskatchewan days. Against the natural light and blue skies everything sparkles. Add a splash of color like the colorful Waxwings or the red berries and you get the opportunity to get some incredible shots.

Editing

I always use my manual settings on a camera and change it as I need to. I try to capture the natural light against my subjects with very little post-processing other than slight contrast or slight vintage adjustments. I find it's better to get the shot through using the camera settings than having to edit in RAW afterwards.

In my camera bag

I have 2 camera's, I carry my Canon SX50 and my Nikon D300. I also have a varity of lenses for my Nikon that I carry, a macro lens, a 400mm zoom and a panoramic lens. I also have a remote flash with a beeper. If I want to take a video clip or really far away shot I will use the Canon.

Feedback

The one thing you have to remember when taking winter shots, the colder the weather the faster you'll use your battery so I always have 3 or 4 spares. I also like to have a bright color to contrast against the white. Last, study the camera white balance. Take the time to practice it. It's about understanding how the color of light affects the way your image looks. By dictating the photography white balance, you can set the mood and feel of a picture.
