Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken at our local Marina on Lake Keowee in South Carolina.

Time

I woke up early that cool January morning to try to get a good sunrise over the lake. I still had time before the sun came up so I walked down a few of the docks and took some shots. The lake has mostly power boats with pontoons the most popular. This image captured one of the only sail boats with still about 30-40 minutes before sunrise.

Lighting

It was a clear morning with only a few clouds on the horizon. With the sun still well below the horizon, it's light reflected nicely on the cool atmosphere with deep yellows near the horizon line to a blue/ magenta sky above.

Equipment

This was shot with my first exchangeable lens DSLR, a Samsung NX 30 with the kit 18-55 lens, shot at 55 mm, ISO 100, f8, and 1/4 s using a tripod.

Inspiration

I had just recently taken up photography as a hobby. After viewing many wonderful images on Viewbug and understanding that the best results and lighting conditions occur around the golden hours, I wanted to take as many as I could.

Editing

At the time of this shot (Jan 2015), I only use Lightroom 4 as a copy of the program came with the camera. My education on how to process came primarily from Internet sites and YouTube videos. I used only basic adjustments.

In my camera bag

About 5 months ago, I sold my Samsung and now own a Sony A7RII. I carry a Sony 16-35, f4 wide angle lens and a 55 mm, f1.8 prime. I anxiously wait for Sony to come out with their latest 70-200 f2.8 zoom to complete lens package. I also have a circular polarizer and 6 stop filter. I carry everything in a Think Tank Speed Freak 2.0 shoulder bag that has a waist strap to distribute some of the load. Being in my late 60s and enjoying hiking to the many nearby waterfalls, this bag is ideal for me.

Feedback

Try to get up early enough to experience the best lighting conditions. Returning to the same spot with various weather conditions can yield very different and pleasing results. Just before and after sunset applies as well. There are just so many opportunities to capture the beauty that surrounds you no matter where you live.
