Location
This was taken on a very misty/foggy morning on Lake Kashagawigamog, near Haliburton, Ontario.Time
Taken at sunrise in October. We drove in the dark to the other side of the lake from where we were staying, so we could get setup to catch what we hoped would be a sunrise. We snuck thru a cottagers property to get to the dock which is the perfect location to catch the sunrise. Fortunately, most cottagers had left for the winter, so we did not disturb anyone, not that we were creating any noise to begin with.Lighting
We had photographed sunrise at this location so many times, that my photographer friends referred to the 'island' as 'Tate's Island'. On this particular morning, we were not expecting to see a sunrise, as there was a lot of mist and fog due to the time of year. So, you can imagine, we were very excited when we could see the sun trying to break thru. Needless to say, it looked nothing like this a few minutes later when the mist had burned off and the fog lifted.Equipment
This was taken with a Nikon F90X camera, Nikkor 20-35mm lens, Kodak Elite II 100 asa (iso) film, Manfrotto tripod, and likely a Tiffen gradient filter. Yes, I am dating myself :)Inspiration
I am fascinated with this island, and like trying to capture it from as many angles as possible as well as in different weather and lighting situations. I love the simplicity and contrast of the 2 trees growing out of a granite rock surrounded by water. For this image, I decided to include a bit of the dock, as well as the sun, in order to draw your eyes thru the image, going between the 3 main items of interest.Editing
Not really, other than to scan the slide to create a digital image. This was taken at a time, when you worked hard to get the best image in the camera, as there was no post processing. In my camera bag
Today, I travel a lot lighter, but still with Nikon and Manfrotto. I am using the Nikon 1 V2 and V3 mirrorless cameras and the 10-100mm and 70-300mm lenses.Feedback
Keep going back to places you love and capture the same subject over and over, but using different angles, lighting conditions, filters, techniques, etc. Decide what draws you to the location, and then try to create an image that reflects how you feel about the place at that moment.
