Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in the bathroom at my mum's house while it was being decorated. I thought the rough walls would make a good background. I didn't end up using them!

Time

It was taken mid morning as the sunlight was starting to come through the window.

Lighting

I'd planned to use the natural light from the window as I didn't have a lot of lighting equipment at the time! I think it gives great shadows and contrast. When the sun came out it was perfect.

Equipment

This was shot quite a long time ago on my first DSLR, the Nikon D60 using the 18-55mm kit lens. No tripod, no flash, just hand held. The camera was entry level but it took great quality images that compared surprisingly well with far more expensive cameras.

Inspiration

I was completing a photography qualification and portraits was one of the required projects. I had an idea as to what I wanted to do but it wasn't quite working as I'd hoped. We took a break for 5 minutes, the model lit a cigarette and the light hit the smoke perfectly. I quickly took the picture. So this was a candid shot rather than posed.

Editing

I did minimal post processing as I exposed for the brightness of the sun which meant that the background was very dark. A simple black and white conversion and it was done.

In my camera bag

Depends where I'm going but I usually have a 50mm prime lens, a zoom and a wide angle if possible. I've moved to a Nikon Z50 recently so I also take the adapter with me. I like to carry a small Manfrotto travel tripod whenever I go away on a trip.

Feedback

I always thought the best shots were taken with expensive studio equipment but this shot proved to me that it isn't the case. If you get the right light you can capture great shots anywhere.
