Behind The Lens

Location

"Cold" was taken at Asbury Park New Jersey, I think it aptly captured the -6 degree temperature that January morning.

Time

This image was captured just after sunrise, I was in the area on a business trip. I had planned on being on the beach to capture the sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean. Of course not everything went as planned. Lessons learned, scout the location, know how to get there, where to park, how to access the area, how much change to you need for the parking meter. In other words, do a dress rehearsal. This day turned out to be the practice day for the rest of the week. The next day I was on the beach, set-up, and waiting for the sun.

Lighting

I have always appreciated other photographers work with this type of a shot and wanted to test my skills and learn some new techniques. I was attempting to capture the sun, the sun through the clouds, the sun rays. I would have liked a warm tropical beach, but then I wouldn't have captured the cold fog on the water.

Equipment

This was taken with a Nikon D3300, the kit 18-55mm lens with an ISO of 400 at 1/2500 shutter speed. I used a tripod simply because I was experimenting, different shots, shutter speeds, etc.

Inspiration

My inspiration was more opportunity of being on the coast at sunrise, my desire to try new techniques and improve my skills.

Editing

I do the least post processing necessary. I use RawTherapy for post processing, it is free and easy to use. I manipulated the white balance, exposure, contrast, and saturation. I want my photography to reflect composition, natural lighting, and skill.

In my camera bag

My bag, changing and growing as I gain experience, try different types of photography and techniques. The basics of the bag starts with a Nikon D3300 kit. Standard kit lenses, a tripod that I picked up from Goodwill. The bag from a local Freestyle member. I've added a remote shutter cable and an assortment of filters.

Feedback

The beach, ocean, and boardwalk present many other opportunities to learn. Check some of my other photos and you will notice different sunrise shots, seascapes, beach, rocks, a seagull, some geese, and a colorful mural. I changed from a fast shutter speed shooting directly into the sun to slower speeds and f stops for other shots. Now that I have some ND Filters my next lessons will using the filters with a slower shutter speed.
