Behind The Lens

Location

At the Guns N Hoses police vs. fire charity boxing event in Jacksonville, Florida.

Time

This was taken at about 8PM indoors under the lights of a boxing ring.

Lighting

The lighting was the lighting above the ring set up for the sporting event.

Equipment

Nikon D700 with 18-70mm Nikon lens. It was handheld with no other lighting (ie, flash).

Inspiration

I love sports photography and I have photographed several of these events. Indoor lighting for sports is always tricky but I just caught the perfect moment where everything came together for this shot.

Editing

Yes, I used some Topaz filters to give the photo the old time boxing feel.

In my camera bag

Two cameras, a Nikon D700 and a Nikon D200. I actually like the D200 better for landscape photos because of its 100 ISO setting but the D700 is great for sports because of the frames per second you capture. I also carry a speedlight and a tripod. I am never without my polarizer.

Feedback

Practice, practice, practice! Indoor lighting is extremely tough for sports so you should experiment with your camera and its settings before a big game or event.
