Behind The Lens

Location
I took the photo in 'la Ragada del ticinetto', South Switzerland.
Time
It was sometime late afternoon - I don't really remember....I was cold and wet, it had been pouring with rain.
Lighting
Good question. As someone who normally works with beautiful, natural light.....I'd say that it's worth taking photographs in poor light or light that isn't picture post card as I did for many years.....and you might, just as I was...be pleasantly surprised.
Equipment
No tripod...though I should have had one (!) - you have to travel as light as possible when trekking. I used a 'dying' Canon 5D with a 24-70 lens...no flash.
Inspiration
It was simply a spectacular scene. The light appeared momentarily and it simply felt right.
Editing
Most of the post processing was cleaning crud from the image ( my sensor was failing and in a sorry state )...so a fair bit of work with the clone tool in Photoshop. I burned in the clouds and applied a little HDR....and sharpened a little - my aim was to keep the image looking as I remembered it - like a painting - grainy and painterly...
In my camera bag
I normally carry just a body and one lens ( 24-70 )....as soon as I'm in a position to do so, I'll kit myself with a leica M9 and a 35 or 50 mm lens.
Feedback
My advice is to try and always have a camera with you and NOT be put off by foul conditions and poor lighting. You do not need to wait for the golden hour, in fact people should not get obsessed ( as I was for years ) with limiting their photography to golden hour times as the results are always pretty much the same. I see too much chocolate box photography with over saturated colours, HDR etc . Personally I find this tendency rather predictable and synthetic.....Experiment, experiment and experiment - take risks and be true to yourself.
