Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Wingham Wildlife Park, Kent in their reptile enclosure

Time

This is one of the first photos I ever took with a digital camera, I had just bought a Fuji Bridge camera and took myself to the local wildlife park for a walk around and to familiarise myself with the camera and settings. This photo was taken just after I had stopped for lunch so would of been around 1300hrs.

Lighting

If I'm honest there is nothing to say about the lighting, I just used the light available to me from the vivarium the snakes were in and the lighting around the reptile enclosure. When this was taken I new absolutely nothing about lighting, or anything else for that matter.

Equipment

The only equipment I used was a Fujifilm FinePix S8000fd 8.0 MP Compact Digital. The first digital camera I ever owned, I couldn't use flash because at the time I had only been using the camera a couple of hours and couldn't stop the flash glare on the glass of the vivarium.

Inspiration

I was just wondering around the reptile enclosure and was struck by the vibrance of colour these snakes had, and the way the snakes were intwined as one. As I had just purchased my camera and wanted to capture every second of the first days shooting I was quick to start getting pictures of these two. Although over the last few years I have upgraded my equipment and bought two more cameras of much better quality this still remains my favourite photo I've taken.

Editing

This photo is as it came out, I didn't possess the equipment or ability to edit this photo when it was taken, although over the years I have played about with this image in different ways, this one (the original) has stayed unchanged.

In my camera bag

In my bag now I always carry my original Fujifilm FinePix S8000fd 8.0 MP Compact Digital camera, a Nikon D3000 and a Nikon D5100. I have an 18-55mm, 55-200mm, 65mm and 300-800mm lenses that I always carry. None off my equipment is expensive, the 18-55mm and 55-200mm lens were not more than £70 each, the 300-800mm lens is an old manual lens that I picked up for £70. I carry a tripod that my daughter bought me for Christmas one year, although if it is windy it is no good I will always leave the house with it.

Feedback

I am glad now that I never edited this, overtime I see it it reminds me of what you can do if you just pick up a camera, you do not need years of training, hundreds of pounds of equipment or a studio to take a great photo, you just need to love what you do, love picking up your camera and painting it at anything you find interesting, Although I would love to buy the best most expensive equipment available, I am happy with what I have, being able to take a photo that I love with just the basic equipment is all I ever want to do, if others like my photos, thats a bonus, but first and foremost I have my camera for me, and if I need to take 50 shots of the same subject before I am happy with the outcome then I will take 50 shots. Never give up as the next shot you take can be your best ever.
