Behind The Lens

Location

I captured this image at Lake Wichita located in Wichita Falls, Texas

Time

This is one of my favorite images. I had just gotten my new Canon camera and was driving around town around 6:30 pm at the height of summer. Our community had been under severe drought and water levels of all lakes were at the lowest levels over the past 100 years. When I got out to look at the lake itself the shoreline had receded by over 300 ft. from the original levels. I walked out to the edge of the water and noticed these old pier structures that had been exposed. With not a drop of wind and temperatures soaring I positioned myself to get the great sunset that was beginning. The posts are actually deceiving because of their reflection was so perfect it's hard to tell where the pole and reflection begin and end.

Lighting

I shot many images to get the most out of the sunset as possible. I had many other great results but, none compared to this image.

Equipment

Canon 70D on a tripod

Inspiration

It was just a sweltering day and I knew about the hill in the distance and wanted to be sure and include it as the general area doesn't have much variation other than flat plains.

Editing

I didn't have to use any post-processing it was all done with my camera settings in a neutral light and slow shutter speed.

In my camera bag

Camera and 3 lenses

Feedback

Sunset can be tricky as you have a limited amount of time to capture the golden hour. Just be prepared with equipment and flexible to get as many images from all perspectives possible and unique subjects that help create the scene.
