Believe it or not, but this picture was actually taken in my old bedroom. I'm bit of a self taught photographer and since I didn't had the money to buy a proper photostudio, but recently moved in with my boyfriend -my old bedroom was empty. So I turned it into my personal little photostudio. It's not big, but perfect for this kind of shootings.Time
I remember this picture was taken late in the evening, around 10:00 PM. I worked together with a wonderful hairdresser -Philip Noppe- on this project, but since he had a hair salon and had to work during the day, we could only do this photoshoot in the evening. But since I'm kind of a nightowl, I work a lot better in the evenings or at night. Most of the time my creativity is on full speed then, so I really didn't mind at all !Lighting
Since I just wanted to focus on the hair and enhance the beauty of this specific look I used just one beautydish and give it a bit of mystical feeling. I liked the darkness and mysterious atmosphere so no further lighting was necessary.Equipment
This shot was made with a basic Canon EOS 600D body, with a 24-105mm 1:4f Sigma lens. I used just one singular beautydish for my lighting and that was it. Evendo a lot people think my pictures are shot with the best and most expensive equipment, this isn't the case. If I could afford it, I would really invest in better equipment. But for now, I try to be creative with everything I have. Sometimes it ends up in wonderful unexpected results -like this one- of wich I'm really proud.Inspiration
I'm a someone who works best with inspiration at the moment itself. You can always have a specific idea, but when you do a studioshoot and makeup & hairstyling comes along, this can change your idea very quickly. Besides being a photographer I'm also a make-up artist and I did the makeup for this photoshoot also. Generally, when I create specific look -like in this case- with a bit a mystery to it, I want to bring the same atmosphere in my picture afterwards. The mystical feeling that the makeup and hairstyle gave me, inspired me to do the same in my photography also.Editing
I did some post-processing for this, but not a lot. I only enhanced the colors a bit and that was all. This picture was also made for a Belgium Hairdresser competition, called the Hairdressers Awards -which we won afterwards- for the first time! The rules of this competions were very clear; you couldn't use photoshop on the hair its self and you had to leave it like it was, with all it's imperfections. Personally I think the little hairs to the side, just make the image even better. We could only enhance the colors and background a bit, so this is what I did. What a challenge was for me, since I'm normally really into photoshop ;)In my camera bag
In my photography bag, you can find a Canon EOS 600D body, with a Sigma 24-105 1:4 IS lens, and my -personally most precious- Canon 70-200 1:2.8 IS ii lens. When I shoot outside I always take my reflection screen with me. So I really don't have much equipment, but if you are creative enough, you can do everything with this.Feedback
Good equipment is important. But actually you don't need that much to create beautiful pictures, all you need in the way to your success is perseverance, seasoned with passion, creativity, good methods and patience.
