The River Coe running swift and smooth past Etive Mor'. I was returning to Glasgow after an assignment near Inverness when I felt compelled to pull over and and grab this opportunity. The majesty of the Glen Coe range as you drive along that gorgeous route can't be ignored it is quite simply stunning. The weather on this particular day was quite bright with a good breeze and not to cold either, I wanted especially to depict the movement of the water and clouds while the granite giants stand their ground like they have for centuries. It is quite astounding to imagine the tectonic activity which first formed this massif and the thousands of years of glacial movements which carved what we see today and it is easy to forget as we whiz past in our comfortable saloons that men fought hand to hand in this landscape, during the times when our ancestry was being formed and clans were victorious or would perish. In order to keep a good level of movement I used a Tiffen 10 stop ND filter this gave me the perfect extended exposure and although this filter works great with black and white photographs the colour cast it gives is quite undesirable for colour work, it can be corrected afterwards but I'm never completely satisfied with altered colours. The camera used for this shot was a Canon EOS 550d with a Sigma 10mm - 20mm lens @10mm with the Tiffen 10 stop ND filter and a Cokin Z ND grad to keep the sky within tonal range. I used an aperture of F.22 and 5 minutes of exposure, with the cameras mounted on a Manfroto 055 carbon with Gitzo head and a Shoot wired controller

I have my own personal problems with this shot even though it does seem to have gain some repute. Firstly I over egged the clarity and it gives the edges a slight halo effect which to me looks very artificial, then the mountain is lacking in contrast comparable to the foreground, it is obvious from the general lighting that the levels should be roughly the same throughout the image, the near foreground is not sharp...unintentionally not sharp it looks poor, if it is meant to be sharp then it must be sharp, finally there is fine grain around most of the image, clearly from the fact that I had used a filter to extend the exposure time I should have had no problem with under exposure or high ISO noise but this image is suffering . So folk please can you critique for me as I am confused as to why it has so much praise compared to so of my much better images
