Congratulations on winning my "on top of the world" photo challenge. I chose this as the winner because you have incorporated the pathway as a lovely leading line to the horizon which in its right is full of amazing colours ! Well done !

Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken from the top of Wildhorse Mountain, 30min north of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

Time

This was taken on Sunset, it is a steep but short walk so it does not taken long to get up to the top. The mosquitoes where terrible, if even a few more had landed on my camera bag I'm sure they would have taken it.

Lighting

When we arrived at the top of the mountain that afternoon, there was hardly a cloud in the sky. Usually you would be shooting to the west to get the Glasshouse Mountains but the light to the north just before dark came to life. If you pick the right time of year you can have the sun drop behind one of the Glasshouse Mountains that give you a bit more time (no harsh sun to deal with)

Equipment

Silk Tripod, Canon 6D, Canon 17-40mm F/4, Hoya HD CPL, Wired Remote

Inspiration

While the Glasshouse Mountains are always lovely to photograph, once I saw the red sky to the north that instantly got my attention. When I walked over to that side of the lookout the path caught my attention as well. Everything seemed to just come together for me

Editing

With processing all my photos they are cataloged in Lightroom, I usually only do very basic processing in LR and move my photos to photoshop for advanced processing and completion. When it comes to processing this image the colour and drama was already in the sky so not much had to be done (grad used to slightly darken sky). I did darken the trees and foliage around the path to enhance it also brightened the path. I didn't notice the person in the photo until I was processing it, I thought of removing them but it gives some size to the image.

In my camera bag

Normally carry in my bag:- Canon 6D, 17-40mm f/4, 50mm f/1.4, Lee filters and CPL Filters

Feedback

If shooting the Glasshouse Mountains from Wildhorse then it is nearly always going to be a sunset shot, these types of red skies happen more from march to July (getting out of storm season) on the Sunshine Coast. I didn't have my filters at the time of taking these so next time they would certainly be put to use instead of waiting for that last light unless you are happy to blend. Lighting can be quite harsh here. 10min earlier the stop difference between sky and ground was nearly 4 stops.
