Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Sossusvlei in Namibia. This area is located at the southern part of the Namib Desert, in the Namib-Naukluft National Park.

Time

The photo was taken at the late morning to get nice sharp shadows. The location is in the middle of nowhere, so locals get you at the back of their pickup. So as Namibia is the sand lover land, you get a nice red skin color during the drive. Upon arrival, you have to be fast at the very end of the former lake to get a clean shot of one of the trees without any other tourists. This location is probably one of the nicest photo spots in whole Africa.

Lighting

One of the important things of this picture is the clear and sharp shadow. So the timing has to be very untypical. Normally you want to avoid these harsh shadows but here it is the target.

Equipment

I had 2 Cameras with me, Canon 5D II with a Canon 16-35mm II and a Canon 7D with a 70-200mm. Tripod was due to the daylight not necessary.

Inspiration

Since 2000 this area is very know due to the movie " The Cell". So since than this spot was on my list.

Editing

There is not to much post processing done at this picture. Just the format was changed (3:2 => 1:1) and due to the RAW File format some contrast, color and sharpening.

In my camera bag

I normally adapt my equipment for each trip. As it is very dusty in Africa, 2 Bodies is a must have. Changing lenses in the desert is not very recommendable if you sleep in tends. Moreover I brought lenses from 16mm to 300mm 2.8 for shouting animals, a tripod and a monopod for the big lens. My experience showed that more than 300mm is not really necessary in desert areas. Due to the heat haze you can't take sharp shots anyway.

Feedback

I would love to take a similar shot at night. So next time I would stay the night.
