Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Rural Ontario. I had just begun the Digital Photography & Imaging Program at Georgian College.

Time

I took this photo around 13:00.

Lighting

I used a 56” Octo on one Paul Buff Einstein 640. I metered first the background and adjusted the flash 1/3 stop higher. I wanted the background slightly darker and I’ve always liked the falloff of a big Octo/softbox

Equipment

Nikon D4, Manfrotto tripod and Ball Head, Paul C Buff Einstein 640W, 56” Octo-Box

Inspiration

I was looking for a location that instilled movement and change, not much better than a Rural railroad and a subject that kinda doesn’t fit.

Editing

Simple skin retouching done in PS, with a touch of color grading

In my camera bag

Nikon D4, Nikkor 24-70mm 2.8, 70-200mm 2.8, 85mm, 50mm

Feedback

Plan your work and work your plan. Time of day is key for this shot as the railroad racing the opposite direction has no vanishing point so we had to shoot with the sun to her back or slightly overhead in order to get a bright background and allowing us to use flash as a key light for the face. Also having a flash head that capable of HSS helps in case it’s to bright and you need to crank up the shutter speed and keep the aperture close to wide open to get that buttery Bokeh
