Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken at the base of Mount Alyeska in Girdwood, Alaska. My family and I were on a two week summer vacation and Mount Alyeska was one of our travel destinations.Time
This photo was taken on July 4th, 2014 at 10 am. We had just finished eating breakfast outside at the base of the mountain.Lighting
The lighting that morning was bright and a bit harsh. I had to play with different angles to avoid getting shadows in the photo.Equipment
This was shot on a Nikon D7100, with an 18 - 300 mm, f3.5 - /5.6 lens. No other equipment was involved.Inspiration
I was photographing the family and taking in all of the mountain scenery when these purple flowers caught my eye. These flowers stood out amid all of the green and blue around us and they drew me in. I took a few shots of just the individual flowers and then I wanted to try adding some depth so I took this shot focusing on one flower in the foreground with others off-center in the background.Editing
I like the challenge of trying to capture photos that can stand alone as shot and in general, I try to do as little post-processing as possible. I have enjoyed taking photos since I was 12 after watching my dad develop our childhood black and white photos in our home darkroom. I guess I grew up thinking that the process of taking a photograph should be simple, pure, and with intent. There are certainly exceptions, and I have learned that sometimes post-processing is a necessity. Oh, and don't get me wrong, I certainly enjoy playing with photo editing and learning new techniques! I am happy to say however for this photo, there was no post-processing involved. In my camera bag
Bag? Well, I guess it depends but usually you will see me with just my D7100 with the18-300 mm lens slung over my shoulder. If I am actually packing a bag then I will bring the Nikon 35mm lens and the Nikon Speedlight SB 910 flash. If I am really serious then I will also bring my Nikon D300 with the Nikon 18 - 200 mm lens.Feedback
If you don't know how to already, learn how to shoot in manual! Be patient and allow yourself to make mistakes. Digital makes it so easy for us to experiment and try different angles and settings. Practice and bring your camera with you whenever you can. Great photo ops are everywhere!
