Behind The Lens

Location

About ten miles north of Marquette Michigan is a nice little park called Little Presque Isle. It is one of the upper peninsula's best kept secrets. One of those spots that the locals go to get away from tourists. This particular morning I had the place to myself. I was working on long exposure shots with the water and thought the trip was going to be a bit of a bust. Before I left the beach to head back to town I turned around to see one of the best sunrises I had ever seen.

Time

I set out on this trip about an hour and a half before sunrise.

Lighting

A few moments before I took this shot the light was overcast and dull. A few moment after I took this shot the sun was up and too harsh for a direct view of the sun

Equipment

For this shot I used a Nikon D3200 with a Sigma 17mm to 50mm wide angle lens. I set up my tripod as low to the ground as I could and used a remote shutter release.

Inspiration

My love of the outdoors and photography motivate me to keep working on my skills and images like this one make that effort all worth while.

Editing

At the time I did not have much Post Processing skill. This was just some basic brightness and contrast adjustment and a little tone mapping. Mother Nature did most of the work here.

In my camera bag

I used most of the equipment in my bag for this shot. My other lens is a Nikon 55mm to 200mm and I have a good selection of filter but I never leave home without a Neutral Density and a Polarizing Filter.

Feedback

The one thing that this shot taught me is that when you are working outdoors and dealing with mother nature be patient. If you think you are all done keep shooting.
