This is the inspiration I need to invest in a dedicated Macro lens instead of reserve mounting a nifty fifty even though 90% of image IQ is behind the user instead of the equipment.

Location
These super huge bee-like creatures are fairly common in the Caribbean. I photographed this one on front of our home, in our garden.Time
I photographed it in the morning, although these hang around most of the day when weather is nice.Lighting
I used natural light which was nice and soft, diffused by leaves. A direct ray of light created a natural spotlight, i just had to wait until the bug came close to it.Equipment
It ios a single shot with Nikon D7100 and the fantastic 70-200mm f1:4 Nano lens for Nikon FX. The only addition was polarizing filter, which helped to soften and blend colors further.Inspiration
When you are surrounded by Caribbean nature, photo opportunities are always around you. But these big bees are really fascinating. They are sting-less, so one can spend time very close to them without any worries.Editing
Unlike most of my photos, this one has very minimal post-processing. just some saturation, sharpening, and dodging in some parts, that's all.In my camera bag
I am a pro photographer. Therefore I can't afford "shortcuts" and have to carry painfully heavy bag. Nikon D800, Nikon D7100, 14mm lens, 20mm, 24-70 f:2.8 zoom, 105mm macro lens, 70-200 tele, a flash ( mostly SB800, because SB900 I also have is just not good enough, overheating after just a few shots). remote trigger, extra batteries. then often there is a second bag with tripod, stand for lighting, set of remote TTL triggers, and other small things. Often 10 to 15 kg of stuff. My back hurts.Feedback
I say - patience is the key. i tried these before but light wasn't good. so, once I saw this is the right time, i spent maybe 2 hrs shooting. You can't say exactly if a photo is good when you look at the tiny camera screen. so, take more pics than you think. Use fairly good depth of field, auto focusing, and you should be good.
