Location
We photographed this image of Noah right outside our studio in the back yard.Time
We shot this image at the end of his senior session and after it had gotten dark. It was June in Southern Indiana and about 9pm so just about 30 min after sunset. Our parking area was in the background so we killed the lights in that area and shot into the darkness.Lighting
This was a fun image to create. It took several attempts and he even kicked the light overtop in one of our attempts. We got one heck of a spark show on that one. We used a 16x60 Sweetlight Soft Strip on a boom overhead straight into his face. The kickers were actually 4x6 Softboxes from Larson Enterprises and all the lights were Paul Buff Einsteins triggered with the Buff Cyber Commander. You can find the BTS of the image here http://www.viewbug.com/photo/63059393Equipment
As I mentioned earlier, Sweetlight and Larson Soft and strip boxes with Paul Buff Einsteins for lighting. My go to camera is my Canon 1Dx and it was a great help focusing. Even with the modeling lights on I was pushing the limits with his movement. I love my slide stands from Lumopro and the boom used in this image as well. It is also from Lumopro. I shot this image with a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS L II at 90mm on a tripod.Inspiration
While I'll admit I pretty much despise soccer, there are some really dynamic movements in the game. Unsure what it is called, but I've always liked this motion and it's something I try to get most kids to do when they want me to shoot soccer stuff for them.Editing
I added the ball in post since placement and timing are a challenge in shots like this and I cleaned up the background and added some smoke and specs in the background to almost give a starry sky look to the images. In my camera bag
This is pretty much the setup I would use for any image like this but my current location kit is as follows. Canon 1dx, 70-200 f/2.8 IS L II, 85 1.2, 16-35 2.8, and 24-70 f/2.8. I light almost exclusively on location with 2 Profoto B1's and my main is usually a 64" Paul Buff Soft silver PLM or a modified High Output dish from Buff that I've adapted to fit my B1'sFeedback
Get the motion in camera and give a real honest try to get it all in camera. However, don't waste time. If you find a challenge that is killing the mood of the shoot, don't hesitate to add that detail in post instead of wasting your subject's time and effort.
