Nice one...the person on the rock gives the viewer an idea of just how small we are! Also, I wanted to welcome you to ViewBug. I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Wow, runner up! That's huge for me! Thank you for all your likes and comments. And thank you to Jenums for sitting so still during the long exposure :-). Check out her images too at viewbug.com/member/Jenums. They are awesome.

Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at Mistaya Canyon on the Icefields Parkway in Alberta, Canada.

Time

I think it was taken in the early afternoon. We'd gotten a late start from Lake Louise, but fortunately took the time to stop at this place that someone had recommended. It was a 10-15 minute hike from the road, but more than worth it!

Lighting

It was a sunny day and not the best time in the day for landscape photography, but there was enough shade in the canyon for it not to matter too much, and shooting in raw I was able to pull out plenty of detail from the shady areas in post processing.

Equipment

I used my Sony A33 with a 10 mm fisheye lens, a tripod, and a cheap ND filter.

Inspiration

This was one of the most spectacular scenes I'd laid my eyes on in my life. Being fairly new to serious photography at the time, I was mostly focused on figuring this long-exposure thing out and wasn't paying much attention to my wife's daughter who had wandered down closer to the falls and was sitting there enjoying the view. Fortunately, she sat completely still for the whole time it took to take the picture (she had no idea what I was doing and how great she looked in that spot), and what a difference she made! I would have been plenty happy with the picture without her there, but with her there, it takes on a whole new dimension.

Editing

I used a Lightroom preset made by Viktor Elizarov at phototraces.com and adjusted it to my liking. I actually have a version of the picture that I like better with less harsh post processing, but I guess this version will be my claim to fame, and that's fine :-).

In my camera bag

Back when the picture was taken, I didn't have much equipment. Just my aforementioned Sony A33 and two Tamron lenses and a fairly cheap tripod. You can get far with not very much.

Feedback

Well, knowing how to do long-exposures is essential for a shot like this. If I hadn't been so lucky that my step daughter was sitting so still, I suppose I could have combined a regular exposure of her sitting there with a long exposure.
