Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in our family cemetery in Somerset, Kentucky. The cemetery is very old and many of the gravestones are unmarked, and in the middle there stands a huge old Maple tree. The photo captures the tree after most of the leaves had fallen, showcasing the twisted limbs.

Time

I am fascinated by spiders and like to hunt for them in the mornings when the light isn't so harsh. For some reason, there are always spiders by this cemetery. This image was taken 12/24/2015 at 10:45 am.

Lighting

The morning sunlight illuminated the dew on the web, making it show up really well in the image. Also, setting the web in front of the dark tree in the background also helped showcase the spiderweb.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D90 camera with a Nikkor 18-105mm lens, and a tripod.

Inspiration

I thought it would be cool to capture the spiderweb in front of the cemetery, creating a spooky feel to the image. The fact that I was working with something that had meaning (family cemetery, love of spiders...) helped get my creative juices flowing.

Editing

I changed the image to black and white in Adobe Lightroom.

In my camera bag

On this particular day I only had my camera slung over my shoulder, a tripod, and a cleaning cloth in my pocket.

Feedback

I like to try things and see if they work. I was pleased with the effect created by the spiderweb in front of the old cemetery. I manually focused on the spiderweb as that was what I wanted to be the most detailed in my image. The morning light on the dew helped illuminate the spiderweb and the fog behind the cemetery helped soften the background. Changing the image from color to black and white created the eerie atmosphere for which I was hoping. I used 200 ISO, f/9.5, and 1/125 sec exposure.
