Chesil Beach is one of the most spectacular storm beaches in the world. It was formed at the end the end of the last ice age when huge waves gathered up rocks from the sea bed (deposited there by glacial movements) and threw them back towards the shore - where they created a bank that today is almost 30 km long, 200m wide and 15 mide high.
Lying behind the bank is the largest lagoon in Britain. Its salinity and low pollution levels have helped to establish precious communities of aquatic plant and animal life.
