Location
This photo was taken at the famous Morants Curve just outside of Lake Louise Alberta,Canada. GPS N 51 deg 23.980 min W 116 deg 07.638 minTime
3:00 pm , timing is everything on this curve as you want the train in the shot.Lighting
I was at the mercy of the weather and sun for lighting during this shoot as the time was dictated by the arrival of the train, fortunately everything fell into place for me at the exact right moment.Equipment
Canon EOS 5D Mark III with a EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens. This image was shot at 24mm. Tripod.Inspiration
This curve was made famous by Nicholas Morant, a staff photographer for the Canadian Pacific Railway. I have seen hundreds if not thousands of shots of this curve and have always been curious as to what the shot would look like if I took a run at it. I planned the shoot for one of the coldest days of the year, -31C (-23.8F) with a wind blowing through the valley. I wanted to capture the essence of winter in the shot and also have the unique atmospheric distortion that is brought on by extreme cold.Editing
Post processing was simple, increased the highlights and opened up the shadows. In my camera bag
Canon EOS 5D Mark III with a EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens, also the with a Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM Lens (love the wide angle) Canon 7D Mark II with an assortment of lenses, the 7D is my work horse camera for rough adventure shoots, absolutely love that camera !Feedback
Take the shot, whether is a famous location or one you just stumbled upon. "oh that has been done a million times" I often grin when I hear a "photographer" say that , I personally do not think there is anything wrong with taking a picture of something that has been photographed a million times, go for it and make it your own. Each shot taken of a scene like this or any other famous spot in the world only enhances the beauty of our planet. I have never seen an identical shot taken of a location as each person views the scene differently, each day produces different light, wind, moisture, clouds and a hundred more variables. Bottom line is, take the shot, never doubt yourself, and only compare yourself to the photographer you see in the mirror. Do not take extreme weather shooting lightly, when it is as cold as it was when this shot was taken you can get into trouble fast, be prepared.
