Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture inside the PAX Terminal (Passenger) at the NATO base on North Kabul International Airport while I was waiting for a flight out to a FOB (Forward Operating Base) in Western Afghanistan. There was a group of US soldiers that came into the terminal who were rotating out of country and had one more hop before they would leave for the US. The fatigue was obvious with many of them.

Time

As I recall, this was taken around 0900; but there have been so many flights, I may have that wrong.

Lighting

This was a fairly high ISO shot as it was relying on poorly operating fluorescent lights in the terminal.

Equipment

this was shot on nothing by my Sony a7r2 with the 24-240mm lens - traveling light!

Inspiration

I took a lot of "Day in the Life" type pictures in Afghanistan, basically trying to give a behind the scenes look at every day life for soldiers, locals, and contractors. It was difficult trying to explain to people what it was like in Iraq and Afghanistan, so over the years, I tried to let the camera make the explanations.

Editing

For this one, nothing but cropping and conversion to black and white in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

Towards the end of my time in Afghanistan, I transitioned from my Sony a77 to the a7r2. Usually I carried extra batteries, the adapter to use a-mount lenses on the a7r2, and an old Minolta 50mm 1.8 for those times when I actually didn't want to use the 24-240mm "walking lens".

Feedback

Remember that things you see every day and are normal to you may be far outside of others' experience. Sometimes, the seemingly mundane has impact, so always keep eyes up and out.
