Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Glacier National Park in Montana.

Time

It was early in the afternoon. We'd driven up the Going To the Sun Road and took the hike to the Hidden Lake. It had been snowing very recently despite this being early September.

Lighting

It was an extremely gloomy day with heavy, heavy clouds and no sunshine at all. But I like that kind of light. I like the gloominess and drama that the light created.

Equipment

I used my Sony A33 with my 10-24 mm Tamron fish eye lens. It was impossible to carry a tripod, but I may have had my monopod. Don't quite remember.

Inspiration

I was just shooting all the way up the mountain, but I do remember knowing immediately that this shot would be special, the way the clouds formed and the boardwalk just kind of disappeared into the sky.

Editing

I made it look a tad more dramatic than it probably was by darkening the clouds a little, but overall it's very true to what it looked like in real life. I have since tried to do more post-processing, but I haven't managed to improve on this version.

In my camera bag

When the photo was taken in 2015 I had a Sony A33, a Tamron 18-270 mm lens and a Tamron 10-24 mm lens. I have upgraded quite a bit since then, but the number one important thing is to seek out these magnificent locations. Equipment comes second as anyone will tell you.

Feedback

Just look up whenever you are walking uphill instead of just looking at your shoes. And don't let bad weather deter you.
