Low tide on the western side of Worthing Pier, in West Sussex, England. The original pier was opened in 1862 as a simple promenade deck and in 1888 a pavilion was added. Steam ships would operate between this pier and the Chain Pier 12 miles east at Brighton. A storm severely damaged the pier in 1913 and it was cut off from the mainland before being rebuilt in 1914. Then in 1933 fire destroyed the northern pavilion and the subsequently re-modelled version, you see today, was completed in 1935. Following the retreat from Dunkirk in WWII, a hole was blown in the pier as a preventative measure against a possible German invasion. It is an English Grade II listed building.
