Behind The Lens
Location
This was taken at my previous house on the outskirts of London, UK. I used to gaze out when I was washing up and loved the light. The rose is from my garden.Time
The kitchen faces west and this was at the end of a balmy summer heading into Autumn just when the light in the early evening becomes perfect.Lighting
I wanted to catch the light just as it filtered throught the wisteria and backlit the flowers in the kitchen window. It was important that it was early Autumn as the light had a beautiful golden glow. There is a sadness in the beauty of Autumn as we know we're headed for winter next.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon EOS 300D DSLR with a zoom lens. I used a tripod as well.Inspiration
I was doing a fine art degree at the time and my practice is about the beauty of everyday things. So my kitchen in it's natural state proved to be the perfect subject. I really didn't arrange or add anything it was just how I liked to have it normally - washing up gloves, liquid soap and all! In this sense it was a very personal photo of a view that I loved and spent a long time looking at every day.Editing
I darkened the border to provide more contrast with the window and to hide extraneous items. I also added a beams of light through the wisteria and spent some time enhancing the colour to exaggerate the warm glow.In my camera bag
I used to have a SLR, tripod, remote and a set of filters including a polariser, then I moved to a DSLR. These days however I like the freedom of a Fuji X-Pro 1 as it is so light and has a fantastic fixed lens on it. I now enjoy the limitations of a fixed lens as it is a challenge to create a good composition and moving yourself makes you think more about it.Feedback
I think there is nothing like a subject that you know personally. It becomes almost a self-portrait. I would advise taking lots and lots of photos at all times of day and night and in different seasons until one just feels right - always trust your unconscious visual instinct. Then you can exaggerate the effect by photographing in the right light at the right time of day. This photo only worked because it had ideal Autumn light and was at the right time of day so that the angle was correct. Then you need to post process gently so tht you bring out the beauty in the photo without making it look artificial.
