Behind The Lens

Location

This was shot on Watson Lake, Arizona.

Time

The first sunset try was a bust but I had to come back and give it a try again. Kevin (the hubby) and I love to explore so when we noticed photographers hanging out on an edge of a rock formation I was curious. We walked all over the place to see what would be a good composition for a sunset shot. As I was photographing the sun went down and the photographers left so we hurried with all my gear to see what they were so fascinated with, especially since we have never been to Watson. I couldn't believe they left it was an awesome location and you should always stay after the sun goes down...that's the best time of the eve. Well, I at least think so. :)

Lighting

This image is an HDR. I totally needed the different files to capture all of the dynamic range. I was so happy it wasn't windy so it wasn't hard to photograph. When the sky blew up with it's desert gorgeous colors I was a crazy woman shooting and repositioning my camera as fast as I can since I new I had a short time to grab it's beauty.

Equipment

Tripod oh yeah, Canon 5DIII and remote trigger.

Inspiration

I had never heard of the place until a fellow photographer shared his image. The rock formations are so cool that I had to photograph them while on vacation in Sedona, Arizona.

Editing

I process my HDR images with the 32 bit photomatic plugin in photoshop. I work the image and then merge the files in photoshop as layers and then use channels to make my masks. I have to say I'm a software addict so I'll use Topaz, OnOne, Nik and other goodies to complete one image.

In my camera bag

I have a backpack with all my goodies. I have 2 Canon 5D's so I can have a wide angle or mid range lens on it and then the other camera will have my favorite Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM AutoFocus Telephoto Zoom Lens. I also love Macro so my 100mm is always with me. Tripods, flash, trigger remote, bags (for rain), tinfoil to bounce light for my macro work and bean back to put my camera on if the tripod won't work for the location.

Feedback

Even if you feel the sunset may be a bust, stay at your location after the sun goes down especially if you see clouds around you. For me it was cool to photograph these amazing rock formations and to add the crazy sky just completes the fun time we had in the Desert. When I see this image I think of the photographers that left this location. Boy, did they miss out on a great photo opp.
