Faith is a mixture of light and darkness: it has enough splendor to admit, enough darkness to refuse, enough reasons to object, light enough to endure the darkness that's in it, enough hope to counter the despair, enough love tolerate his loneliness and his mortifications.

Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken during a sunset in late summer in Rome, on the balcony in front of the church of "Santa Maria in Ara Coeli".

Time

The photo was taken during the sunset in late summer.

Lighting

I used a wide angle lens in order to have a good views of the main character and the landscape. The depth of field in this case is very important and I chose to "close" the diaphragm to get a slightly effect "star" of the sun.

Equipment

The camera was a Canon 6D equipped with the wide angle lens Samyang 14mm f/2.8 IF ED UMC Aspherical. I shot without tripod and without flash.

Inspiration

I tried to capture the moment in which the nun is gathered in prayer in front of a setting sun. The low sun at sunset, right in front of me and her, represents the divine greatness and the nature power. With his eyes fixed somewhere between me and the sun I tried to symbolize the connection that the man between human nature and the divine.

Editing

On this shot I performed a light post production, using only Lightroom. I mostly turned-down the lights and lightened the shadows, and a light crop that would limit the area in the lower right corner due to the disturbing effect of the notice-board in the composition. I deliberately left everything as natural and harmonious as possible without excessive force processing.

In my camera bag

I always use my camera Canon 6D. My favourite lens at the moment is the Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM. It is fantastic and even if is unusal, I love to shot some kind of portrait by this lens. In my bag can not miss my Canon EF 24-70mm f/4 L IS USM. Especially for the picture of landscapes and for the milky way I use Samyang 14mm f/2.8 IF ED UMC Aspherical. This is a very nice lens and very useful also for architecture and street photography. In my bag can not miss the plate in ND filter to 3, 6 and 10 stop and the GND filter to 6 stops as well. Indispensable is the tripod Benro Travel Angel C28 with Manfrotto head.

Feedback

I can suggest to everyone that the best time to make photos like this is at sunset. I love the sunsets because in these moments, the light becomes hot and do not create areas of excessive dark/light contrast. The whole picture is more harmonious. I can also suggest to photographer not search his/her shooting eager, but to wait quietly for the right time, to build the image first in his/her head that the viewfinder. This picture was taken in Rome. Rome is a fantastic place: it is full of photographic opportunities. So, I can suggest to travel a lot, because it is a fundamental prerogative for artistic and personal growth.
