Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Bear Mountains, New York in the Fall of 2015.

Time

It was an early afternoon with a lot of leaves present on the ground.

Lighting

I personally like a little sun shining through branches or between the tree tops, but it was quite a cloudy and chilly day. I was happy when I found a little place with less trees and more light coming through.

Equipment

This image was captured with Canon 5D Mark II and EF 70-200mm f/2.8L lens. Handheld and no flush was used.

Inspiration

Living in New York limits a lot of times access to wild nature. I went hiking with my friends and and my daughter, and decided to take my dog with us. Seeing my little maltese a lot of times sinking so deep in piles of leaves and heaving fun with it, I wanted to capture his happy and enjoyable expression and the contrast between his white color and Fall colors was a nice addition to overall presentation.

Editing

With single exposure of 1/100 sec, aperture of f/2.8, and selective focal point set, I was able to achieve good focus on the dog and a beautiful bokeh using the natures beauty of colors in the background. I lowered down a bit shadows level later in post edit using Photoshop software. That was the only edit that was done to this image.

In my camera bag

Normally I carry with me Canon 5D Mark II, two lenses, a silver/gold reflector, and a monopod. On average, I would have my 70-200mm f/2.8 and either portrait 85mm f/1.2 or 100mm f/2.8 macro lens. When I travel far away and for few days, I take most of my equipment with me.

Feedback

I shot Raw and use mostly manual focusing. I love to use selective focal points and either center-weighted metering mode or spot metering mode. In this image center-weighted mode was used. If I'm not happy with existing lighting, I work on creating it with eather use of higher ISO or use of reflector. In my opinion, lighting is the key in photo planning and creation!
