Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken not far from where I live. It is a spot I frequent because I know there are a lot of deer in that area. I`m a recent graduate of the awesome photography program at Madison College in Madison, WI. and what I enjoy most is photographing wildlife, nature, landscape and architecture.

Time

This was taken July of 2015 around 2 in the afternoon. I was out looking for things to photograph and decided to check out this location. I wasn`t expecting to see anything especially that time of day, but when I pulled there they were. I pulled over quick and had my camera out and took as many shots as I could. I managed to get some decent images. There was a twin fawn with them but it wasn`t close enough to get them all in the frame.

Lighting

It was a bright sunny afternoon and the sun was high. That helped greatly with getting a decent image.

Equipment

I was using a Canon 60D with a Canon 70-300mm lens. No tripod or flash.

Inspiration

I enjoy wildlife and one of my favorite things to photograph so I`m always inspired to be in the outdoors and finding new locations to capture whatever I can get. I have a lot of patience and can sit for hours waiting for something. Plus I love to learn all I can about the subject I may be after and study up on their habitat.

Editing

I always shoot in RAW format so I have a big enough image to work with, but as far as this image goes I didn`t do much for editing. I just brought out some contrast and white balance as well I believe. Plus some color as well. There really wasn`t much for editing on this one.

In my camera bag

I use a Canon 7D Mk II. I started out with a Canon 60D but have since sold that. It was a very good camera, but the 7D is excellent and especially for wildlife. For lenses I have a Canon 10-18mm, 50mm, 240-105mm, and a 100-400mm. A canon 430Ex II speedlite I will use at times and keep in my bag. I use a Benro Tripod and head plus a Movo gimbal head.

Feedback

I would say for any advice I can give is find locations that may have what you`re looking for. Most times it`s a waiting game so have a lot of patience. If you are going after something specific then by all means learn all you can beforehand about the subject. Another piece of advice is if you`re going after wildlife then always have your camera ready because there are going to be times where you could have had a good shot but missed it. Also know your equipment inside and out. Thank you!
