Wonderful job. A limited DoF works fine here, and I love the model's expression the most.

Behind The Lens

Location
This is one from a series shot in studio, in Victoria, Canada. The whole series is about two male characters - one sad, gloomy, with skin cracking - this guy. Another character had a very colourful body paint, and was the total opposite. Browse my images to see these duo shots. The model here is pro arts model Michael Ward. He is painted with sculpting clay, and photographed while the clay dried (imagine the mess in the studio!) Michael is real master of creating moods through expression and body language.
Time
The session was photographed using strobes in darkened studio, so time of day is relevant. I think it was around noon.
Lighting
I used three strobes with softboxes - two equipped with honeycomb for a more precise light distribution, and one for basckground lighting . But this could be achieved with different lighting too - not a very difficult setup.
Equipment
Equipment? Nikon D800 with zoom lens 24-70 f2.8. Lighting I just mentioned above...
Inspiration
I am an art photographer with over 40 years of experience. I am constantly searching for new ideas, ways of expression. Working with Michael was my most creative period in life, I think. We created many totally different works, most of them winning international awards at various photo salons. If you browse my images here, you may find many with Michael, such as the Dentist, Anatomy Lesson, and others - images which I believe are significantly better (although less popular on viewBug for some reason) than this one. I hope you'll enjoy...
Editing
Post processing is very impoertant for me, although this image did not have too much of it. Basically, image was cropped, and darkened in corners a bit. Colours were reduced to almost black and white (holding about 20% of colour information). And - that was it. A simple image - at least comparing to many of my other works.
In my camera bag
I do have several bags, depending on what kind of shoot I do. But my main bag usually holds Nikon D800, 3 or 4 lenses (24-70, 20mm, 14mm, 105mm. Release cable, CPL filter ND filters, spare batteries, and so on. Surely, for this shot many of these extras were not required.
Feedback
Come up with the idea, and try to decide about every detail ahead. Lighting, background, light separation from the background, interaction of models, and so on. When you shoot - you simply know already how to set the stage, and you are ready to direct your models and MUA. But have eyes open for unexpected moments - sometimes it pays to explore an unexpected situation, pose. To be open, creative, and let the situation play itself.
