Behind The Lens

Location

Taken on a walk, near Frensham Gt Pond in Surrey, with my wife Di and her sister Sue. Max or 'The Maxmeister General' is Sue's dog and has such a fantastic character. Normally likes to chase sticks, however, this time we took out a 'smiley ball' for him to chase. I always take a camera on my walks and this just about captures his amazing spirit.

Time

Around 4.30pm on 29th August 2011

Lighting

It was a bright sunny day, in an open field, so lighting wasn't a problem, but he is a fast dog

Equipment

Canon 500D with a 100 - 400mm IS L Canon lens Mark 1at 1600/sec ISO 1250 F5.6

Inspiration

I've many pictures of max, in many poses, this just sums up what a happy dog he is.

Editing

I normally put a bit of colour into photos and increase clarity and contrast. ADOBE Elements used. Cropping is important to take out any distractions.

In my camera bag

Simply depends on where I'm going and what I am expecting. On a day's expedition I'll take field equipment, my Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5 -5.6 IS USM, lens and my Canon 5D mk 111. Also my 1.4x Converter and Canon EF 24-105mm F4 IS USM, plus either tripod or mono. With family celebrations and weddings then my Canon 'nifty-fifty ' EF 1.4 USM (and no 100-400mm). Canon Speedlight 430 EX mk1. I always ensure I have 2 extra batteries (as well as the two in the Grip) and plenty of cards. If I'm tutoring, (wildlife and nature) I'll cut down on the equipment but still take some kit... just in case!!

Feedback

This photo was taken in 2011 and since then I've had a lot of practice. I've found 'Back Button' focusing very useful and shoot in Manual, allowing the 5D to work out the ISO. Fortunately with the Canon 5D (and as it is wildlife normally) slightly higher ISOs are no problem. Practice, understanding the camera and reading lots of articles is the key. I've also attended some courses at Going Digital here in the South East of England which proved very useful.
