Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken early one morning on one of our local beaches. Even though there was no wind, the sea was slightly choppy and the surf quite small. Nobbies Beach in Newcastle NSW Australia is a small peninsula that was created to block the harbour from the sea and prevent loss of life. There were many wrecks that happened in the past because the wrong path was taken. it is a popular surfing and swimming beach that sits on the doorstep of the city. The beach looks East and the sun rises straight off the beach in summer.
Time
The image was taken about 8am on a still summers day. The beach is well frequented and was slowly beginning to fill up. The subject of this image was off by herself away from the main patrolled area. She was taking an early swim before the day got too hot. Even though the beach can get busy there is enough room to get off by yourself
Lighting
The sun had come up and there was a heavy sea haze. No Wind or breeze. That comes later in the morning. As a result the light was quite diffuse and had a slight yellowish tinge to it that gave the sea a light sheen of copper.
Equipment
My camera is a Nikon D90 and I was using a 70-200 DX Nikon lens that came with the camera. The shot was hand held.
Inspiration
When Im out and about just wandering I tend to take images of things that grab my attention rather than have a clear cut plan for a shoot session. I saw the woman entering the surf away from other beach-goers, and liked the loneliness and the solitude that she evoked. The expanse of the solitude of the sea contrasting with the fragility and strength of the human form.
Editing
yes landscapes and many images can require some processing. In this case I had a subconscious idea of what I wanted from the image but had yet to actively form it. I sat on the image for 12 months or so looking at it every so often. This is fairly common with me. One day I "just Knew" where to go with it. The sea was choppy, but I needed strength and serenity for the sea. I took the image and using software smoothed out the sand and water horizontally. This accentuated the swells rather than the chop. I kept the copper colouring on the sea but accentuated it to give the warm sunrise glow. The woman I left as she was. Sharp and clear as she was confidently entering the calmness of the ocean.
In my camera bag
I don't have much in the way of equipment. I normally just carry the camera with the strap wrapped around my hand. I sometimes carry a small backpack that has just enough room for the camera a small second lens and maybe a flash. However, unless I specifically want to use a smaller lens I generally find the 70-200 lens sufficient.
Feedback
Ahhhh. Advice. I like to think this image is actually better than I perceive it as. Im too close to it. It is my baby, so to speak. Capturing the basic elements of the image are simple enough. Water. Person. Sun. Light. In any combination and location you want. But... Putting them together into a coherent image with some sort of pizzaz and appeal - that is another kettle of fish. No matter what I say you will hear something different from elsewhere. Some people spend time planning and looking for specific shots while others just point and shoot. I tend to fall into the latter group but over many years I have learnt to look for the image when possible. What we see. What we want. What we look for. A lot of that is built into our individual personalities, and then you can add things like framing, light direction and composition. Just a simple crop can sometimes give a better defined photo. Often this is not possible and so, like this image, I "pull" the image I wanted using software and imagination. Like the smoothing of the water that I have actually seen in a different time at that location. Does this always work? No. But I enjoy doing it. I enjoy playing with the image and possibilities. I enjoy looking for what I know is buried in the mess of information that I have captured with my camera. Sometimes, like with this image, I am not really aware of what I am seeing when I capture the image. Some purist say that you should get the image right in the camera straight up. To me thats a good proposition when you are in the studio or have a range of equipment and help at an outdoor shoot. Or when using film. When shooting digital there is generally always some processing involved, especially if you shoot RAW. Most people these days shoot with a digital camera. Learn the camera and I would highly recommend that you learn and use image editing software. Most cameras will come with some form of software that is more that adequate for the basic changes, or you can expand out into third party software. There is some very good software on the web that is free. Whatever you use, simple things like cropping, lightening shadows, changing contrast and colour will greatly help improve your images. So, My advice? Choose a path that suits you. See with your heart as well as your eyes and look at what you see through the viewfinder. Learn from your experiences as well as from others. Enjoy what you do.
