Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in a local farmers field to which he is a regular visitor. Kendal, Cumbria. United Kingdom.

Time

This was taken around 2pm and I was very lucky as the bird chose to fly straight at me.

Lighting

It was bright sunshine and the light just happened to be at the perfect angle to illuminate every feather detail.

Equipment

Canon 60D with a Canon 100-400mm EF IS 'L' which was hand held and due to the lovely light no flash was used or required

Inspiration

I love wildlife, especially birds and I regularly walk in this area to try and catch this animal. He is in fantastic condition and not easily spooked.

Editing

Yes, but not much the colour and sharpness were spot on straight out of the camera, however there was a post in the lower left which was removed as it was distracting.

In my camera bag

I have four different bags for different kinds of shooting, the common items are usually 5ds-r, 70D mk2, 50mm 1.2 'L', 24-105mm 'L', 100-400mm F4/5.6 'L'. Beyond that I use regularly, 400mm 'L' prime, 600mm F4 mk2 'L' prime, plus several others I mix and match to meet that day's requirements.

Feedback

Wildlife and especially birds takes dedication and many hours sitting around doing nothing to then have 10 minutes of frantic action to shoot. The key thing with birds is make sure your camera is set to shutter priority, a slow moving bird 1500th/sec. and up to 4000th of a sec for something like a hummingbird due to their fast wing beat. Shoot in bursts ideally using a camera that is more than 5 frames per second. Finally practice panning on larger slow moving birds, panning is an art and takes time to perfect.
