I first encountered these quizzical birds in 2006, shortly after taking up birding as a hobby. I remember seeing a photo of one that summer in my first "bird book" and really wanting to see one in person. Come winter I found a small flock feeding in the trees inside the condo complex where I live. Since then I always look forward to their arrival each year. They begin showing up as early as September. December is the peak of their activity in my neighborhood, when they come to gorge themselves on the abundance of food.
