Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken in the Palouse area of Washington State from a promitory called Steptoe Butte. It was shot in the spring when the wheat fields are a rich green.
Time
It was captured in the morning when the low sun casts shadows that accentuate the rolling hills.
Lighting
This location is best in the morning or sunset. Not only is the light sweeter, but the shadows show off the landscape texture.
Equipment
The shot is shot with a Canon 5D MkII mounted on a window clamp. and a 70-200 F4L to compress the depth of field.
Inspiration
I visit this location every couple of years because it is different all seasons. It is about a 4 hour drive from my home.
Editing
Just some minor tweaks with saturation.
In my camera bag
Canon 5D MkIII, Canon 70-200 F4L, Canon 24-105 F4L, Tamron 15-30 F2.5 Wide Angle, Tamron 90mm F2.8 Prime Macro, and enough extenders, batteries and cards to weight it down properly. My bag is an old but sturdy and trusty Lowepro Mini Trekkor. It holds a ton of stuff and has worn like iron. My current tripod is a carbon fiber Sirui M-3204 with a Benro B3 ballhead.
Feedback
Steptoe Butte is in Eastern Washington State and is a state park. It is open before dawn until after dusk. It is 1,000 feet in elevation and definitely the higheat peak by far for miles. It has a paved road without guardrails that circles it a couple of times to the top. There are lots of spots to photograph from in all directions. Sunrise and sunset are the best times od day. There are a lot of old barns, silos, small towns and patchy fields nearby to shoot. Palouse Falls State Park is also close, with a picturesque waterfall into a canyon. Bring your telephoto and wide angle for a variety of shots and drive careful on the road..
