Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the shore of West Lake, Hangzhou, China.

Time

The shot was taken just before sunset.

Lighting

I knew my camera and lens combination could deal with a direct shot into the setting sun. The success depended upon a light haze to cut down the direct glare.

Equipment

The camera used was a Canon 5D MKII with the nifty 50, 50mm F1.8. The shot was hand held

Inspiration

I wanted to get a shot of the sunset over the lake. The presence of the pagoda seemed like a good addition to the shot.

Editing

Being a difficult shot straight into the sun brightness balancing to taste across the shot was necessary.

In my camera bag

The equipment I normally carry in addition to the Canon 5D MKII is a Carl Zeiss135mm F2.8 lens.

Feedback

The secret to getting a similar shot is to know the lighting of the area. Sunset shots are obviously time critical. Get there ahead of time!
