Behind The Lens

Location

Arctic Fox photo was taken in November of 2014, near Cape Churchill, Manitoba

Time

Early morning. Approximately 7:00 am. Light had just brightened to the point of being able to see objects at a distance. Heavy overcast with blowing snow. Minus 30 deg F. Wind near 25 mph.

Lighting

Early morning, low light with blowing snow. Photographing on days like this are at times difficult, especially when the nearly white furred subject is against a white back ground in blowing snow

Equipment

Canon 6D Full frame, 800mm lens, Sand bag rest

Inspiration

I enjoyed watching and photographing the fox as he was busy digging up a frozen food cache in the snow.

Editing

I did use some post - processing to enhance and brighten the photo slightly, as well as bring out the subject better on the white background.

In my camera bag

A Canon EOS 1D Mark II full frame, with a 6D full frame backup camera. Canon 16-35mm wide angle lens, Canon 100-400mm, lens, Canon 70 - 300mm lens, a Canon 800mm in a separate bag, Manfrotto ball tripod. Weather sleeves, micro fiber lens clothes, camera hoods, spare batteries. In winter, pocket heat pads that I put into my pockets with spare batteries when its below zero along with extra large zip lock plastic bag that will hold the camera and lens to prevent moisture accumulating in the camera and lens when I bring them in from the cold.

Feedback

Patience, and knowing your subject. I've photographed wildlife from wolves in Yellowstone, Polar bears in the Arctic to Leopard seals in Antarctica. When photographing these animals I have learned to have patience. Know the traits of the animal and when you are about to give up for the day, pause and wait a bit longer as most generally the best action of the day is about to begin. If the photographer is photographing in Arctic or Antarctic type temperatures, remember to carry a zip lock bag that the camera and lens will fit in and close it before bring the equipment inside where its warm. Condensation forms on and in cold cameras and lens if left unprotected. Always carry Spare batteries in your pockets where they will remain warm. Freezing temperatures zap battery life.
