Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken while on holiday at monkey haven. One of the animal sanctuaries on the Isle of Wight. I made the jump from a compact camera over onto a DSLR 4 years ago. I learnt the basics of photo from a DVD box set from Karl Taylor mastrclass. By putting into practice the fundamental of photography I learnt how to fully control my camera & I'm still learning today.

Time

This photo was taken on the Friday, which was our last day of our holiday, we'd checked out of our accommodation & headed for the monkey haven. This was taken at 10:45 in the morning, I stopped at one of the bird aviary & saw the 3 vebra finches cuddled up on the branch. Focusing on the middle bird & a fast shutter speed. I captured this photo in a group of photos I took.

Lighting

On reviewing the photo on camera, I saw the finches well exposure. I was really pleased & loved the photo, at the time it became my favourite photo I'd taken. I had to use +1 stop compensation to expose the finches proper as their aviary was in the dark from being in the shade.

Equipment

This was taken on my Nikon D7100, Tamron 18-270mm & no other equipment.

Inspiration

the photo was a spite of the moment as the three finches cuddled up to one another.

Editing

Yes, as there is another finch in the top left of the photo, I used a radical filter & brush to darken the outer part of the photo down in exposure making the finches the focus of the image.

In my camera bag

I normally carry my Nikon D7100, Tamron 18-270mm, nikkor 50mm 1.8 prime, triggers, shutter release cable, flashgun, spare sd memory cards, filters & holder & cleaning clothes. On outside I attach my tripod & monopod.

Feedback

My advice would be not to rush & be patient, take test photos to get everything the way you want the shot to look. Then when you see your shot, you can shoot away.
