Behind The Lens

Location
All my pictures are taken around downtown Portland, where happens to have an atypical number of homeless people. I was told when I arrived here ( I am Brazilian) that such phenomenon happens because Portland has a large number of NGOs and shelters. Therefore they have more chances to get helped. This particular picture was taken on a very well known place, called Pioneer Square, a sort of mark zero of Portland and a very touristic spot.
Time
I am a street photographer, so light is a vital part of my workflow. I never take pictures between 11 and 2 o'clock in order to avoid harsh light. This particular one was taken about 4 o' clock afternoon ( thing that would be impossible today, since in the winter it gets dark 4 p.m here), in a very cliche-like Portland's rainy day.
Lighting
All this exposure is all new and awkward to me, and it is rather funny when people approach me asking what my "secret" is. I, of course, never have an answer. With that said, if I had to give one advice on how to improve your pictures I would say, get to know your light source. I used to do illustrations as a hobby and light & shadows are fundamental parts of the drawing process and I guess I brought this background to my photography. Once you get to know the ins and outs of lightening I assure you that you will be halfway to a better and more interesting portrait.
Equipment
This particular shot was done with a Canon 6D and 85mm 1.8
Inspiration
Being raised by a single mother ( dad died, when I was only 8 years old) and experiencing myself the social barriers that one faces when having the tough luck of being born among the less empowered, I've always being eager to make the voices of those who live below the radar of social standards heard. As of June of 2015, I started a personal project called "Careful: Soul Inside, where I get to know homeless people who live around downtown Portland area, talk to them, and write their stories along side the pictures. It is a bittersweet feeling listening to every sad story, but gives me a sense of associating my photography with something bigger that gives me the sense of usefulness.
Editing
YES! I As I said before, light is the "secret for my pictures, but I generally label my work as "fineart photography" due to the fact that they are ( shamelessly )heavy post-processed in Photoshop and Lightroom, in order to get the dramatic look. I find sharpening, Dodge & Burn and textures fusion, the processes that work the best for my workflow.
In my camera bag
I am a street photographer and I believe the less I carry around the better for my back (laughing)! While out there, all I use is my camera and a pair of lenses. I am am helpless Canon guy, so whenever shooting all I have is my backpack is my 6D, 85mm 1.8, and 50mm 1.8 ( yes, the super cheap one!), and a little bit of creativity, and that's all!
Feedback
Look around! You are surrounded by interesting people, interesting stories and subjects, just waiting for to be told and clicked. Get to know people, get to talk to them! Also I would recommend you studying how light behaves, getting yourself a good and sharp pair of lenses and don't be afraid of trying and failing. That's how we get there and learn what we should do differently in order to improve.
