The frosty white appearance can be deceiving in this vast valley basin. It may seem like ice, but it's actually made mostly of Sodium Cloride - or table salt. The salt flats of Death Valley spread out over nearly 200 square miles. The little rain that does occur each year washes minerals down from the nearby mountains and eventually makes it's way into the valley floor. Wild and chaotic formations appear when the muddy surface, mixed with the salt, goes through an extreme evaporation process.
