Location
This photograph of Tasha was taken in the lobby of her music studio. We had previously collaborated on some creative projects, and this photo session was taken for her album artwork. There was actually another model in the photo with her, but afterwards I thought the photo would work great of her being solo. So I changed it up a bit.Time
We were indoors and didn't look at the clock. The photo shoot lasted around 2 hours including the set up.Lighting
This photo was taken back in my micro-budget days, I had to make due with very little. I positioned 3 tungsten lights on stands. The soft key was diffused with a sheet of opal. The back light on her hair was adjustable on a dimmer I made from HomeDepot. To get the cappuccino skin tone we wanted, I color balanced to make the image warmer and over-exposed a little bit.Equipment
The photo was taken with my old consumer Canon Rebel. That was a few camera body's ago. I used the kit lens which was the EF-S 18-55mm. It was just bare-bones in those days. The camera was mounted on a old Velbron tripod with a fluid head which I still have. I positioned 3 lights on stands and put on some diffusion.Inspiration
Tasha new exactly what she wanted to see in the photograph right down to the wardrobe and positioning. After we chatted, I knew how we would light and shoot it.Editing
I used Adobe Photoshop to soften the skin a little for the dreamy effect. I digitally removed the other model in the photo who was leaning on her shoulder. In my camera bag
In my camera backpack, I carry my trusty Canon 70D. I don't carry all my lenses together at a time, but I regularly use: EF 24–70mm f/4L IS USM, Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM, Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard, and Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM Wide Angle Lens. Yongnuo Speedlite YN565EX. Silver/Gold reflector. Polarizer. Neutral Density filters. Sometimes I bring my 20D as my backup camera.Feedback
Plan out what you want the final image to look like. Storyboard your photos like a comic strip. That way you can plan how you will light and position your subject in a flattering way. Scout the location beforehand, so you will know exactly what you are dealing with on the actual day of the shoot.
