Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at the Vatican museum whilst on holidays.

Time

It was in the afternoon and worked out well as the sun was pouring in through from above which provided good light but also great shadow.

Lighting

If it was taken at a different time of day it would be a totally different image. With the light coming from above and the brightest point being at the bottom of the stairs helps draw the viewer though the image.

Equipment

This was my first DSLR a Nikon D5300 which I've since upgraded. It was taken with a Tamron 18-270mm and I rested the camera on the top of the stairs for stability to get the shutter speed as it was darker than the image is and I was improvising without a tripod.

Inspiration

The architecture was amazing and this point of view I knew it was a great shot to document our holiday.

Editing

Lightroom. Contrast kick Shadow lift Highlight reduction in centre Clarity adjustment Small vignette

In my camera bag

Nikon D750 24-70mm f2.8 50mm prime Manfrotto 190 tripod with good size ball head. Remote trigger SB-700 speed light ND filter Polariser Peak Design straps Plenty of lens cloths

Feedback

You have all the control. Try different views, angles and perspectives. Control what you want in the frame and give yourself the time to think and create with intent. In an ideal situation it would have been ISO 100 f8 and on tripod to get the best shutter but the people would be blurred and due to the situation with the light and no tripod I had to problem solve. Still can't believe I got it at f4. Set it up, stabilise the camera, exhale and hit that button.
