This is a Venusta Orchard Spider ... taken on a walk through the Northlake Nature Preserve, Mandeville, Louisiana. I was there taking photos of the marsh.

Aside from the lovely marsh, there were turtles, a blue heron, song birds and beautiful trees along my route. Then on my way home noticed these beauties suspended along the path. I went back to the car for my extension tubes and tripod then spent the next hour shooting these tiny wonders (the whole spider about a 1-4 of an inch).

At the time I didn't know what they where and tried not to get too close! But it seems they are harmless ... and they certainly are lovely! :D

What macro lens are you using?
ntgreen
ntgreen February 14, 2016
I don't have a true Macro lens yet (but it is high on my wish list) ... I was using my Canon EF 24-105MM L with a 31MM extension tube. I did a Behind the Lens ...so the basics of equipment and how I took it are at the bottom of the page. But if you have any other questions please feel free to ask :D

I hate spiders...but this is a great photo! The colors are gorgeous, and the angle makes it a little less scary. Congratulations on being a finalist!

This is a very special comment ... I understand fear of something as I feel that way about snakes but every once in a while someone will have a photo that make me see the beauty in them (although I know it is there it is hard to see past the fear). If I did a little of that for you I am very pleased. They were such tiny and delicate little things ... and totally harmless ... it was my favourite angle as well ... it looked to me like she was reaching out to weave the sunlight into her web :D

This is amazing! I will have to keep an eye for these beauties when I am exploring around the bayous. Do they tend to be closer to the water or further inland where it is dryer as near long leaf pines?

Hi, thanks so much for the comment. When I first noticed these little critters it was along a path through an open field (very like a power line). I had to go back to our campsite to get my extension tubes and tripod, on my return to the area where I first saw them I noticed that they where also all along the path through the forest (they seem to like shrubs of varying sizes, waist height and up). Also, it was early December when I saw them. Hope this helps, let me know if you need more info, happy to help. Let me know if you find them

Behind The Lens

Location
Photo was taken at a small nature preserve in Mandeville, Louisiana (Northlake Nature Preserve).
Time
It was about 12:30 PM ... mid day ... which I normally avoid but there was some cloud cover and I was in a forest so the light was filtered quite nicely by the trees.
Lighting
It was a pretty dark ... definitely not quite a bright as I would have liked due to the cloud cover and being in the woods. But the the way the light was filtered through the trees did enable me to find areas of both dark and light which helped in getting the semi-back-lit bokeh. (I am saving for a ring light for Macro shots but haven't got one yet ;D) Setting were ISO 400 F/4 180 Focal 105mm +31mm extension tube
Equipment
Lens was my EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM and for this shot I used a 31mm extension tube, tripod and a wireless remote shutter release. Hardest part was working around all the spider webbing and not shaking the bushes ... seemed every time I took a breath something would move. I finally got out my remote shutter release so I could step away from the bush and get the shot after everything settled.
Inspiration
During the journey through the preserve I caught flashes of web all along the pathway, finally I stopped and took a closer look and realized what beauties these lovely ladies were. I did not have my tripod or extension tubes on me but after realizing what treasures I had found, hurried back to the truck and got them. Then spent the next couple of hours exploring them in more detail!
Editing
Yes, but not a lot. I shoot in Raw so there is the standard colour and light adjustments and I as I have a cropped frame camera (T5i) it did need some noise reduction. Then in Photoshop I cropped it and did some High Pass Sharpening. I also rotated image 180 degrees, the original positioning of the spider just didn't work (composition-wise) but when I rotated it the whole image worked far better. The spider became a much stronger focal point and the circle behind her reaching front legs stood out in a more dramatic way.
In my camera bag
Extension tubes, tripod, 70-250mm kit lens, 50mm lens, 10mm Tokina lens, 2 remote shutter releases (one wireless and one wired), I use my camera bag as a weight for my tripod as my tripod is pretty lightweight, extra battery, extra sd cards, lens cleaning equipment and (as yet unused, homemade HD filter).
Feedback
Keep your eyes open ... always look around you as you walk ... examine everything, you never know where some tiny beauty is hiding. Keep your equipment near. I can't carry all my equipment due to a bad back but I do keep it as close as possible. If I am walking a long distance I always take my extension tubes, tripod and remote shutter release with me (I always carry my extra battery and sd cards). Patience is the only way ... take as much time as you possibly can ... look for the best position for lighting, angle for your subject, take a test shot and if it doesn't look quite right make the adjustments needed and try, try again. Watch out for "hidden" distractions (composition-wise), a too bright colour that will pull the eye away from your image, a bit of twig blocking some portion of your subject ... the little things that you can miss when taking the shot that jump out at you once you get home ... and then it is too late (believe me, this has happened to me more than I like to admit ... and I get so angry at myself for not paying closer attention or taking those few extra minutes to get the shot just that much better). Don't be afraid to crop and rotate ... play with your image (within reason) ... it is not always possible to get the perfect angle when in the field but some of that can be done once you get home. Study other peoples work and read who they got their results.
