I work at a lodge that caters to Aurora viewing and dog sledding in the Northwest Territories CanadaTime
I took this shot some time after midnightLighting
I had put some small candles in the teepee for effect and and when I came out the Aurora was starting to get bright the sky was very clear and darkEquipment
Canon Rebel EOS with a Tokina AT X16 AF PRO DX 11-16 At 2.8 for 14 seconds with tripodInspiration
I had been waiting most of the night for the Aurora to get stronger. When all of a sudden the Aurora started to dance and work its way over towards the teepees. I waited for about 15 minutes and then it happened, the Aurora started to come out in bans and started to really dance across the sky. shortly after i took the picture the aurora became week and never got strong for the rest of the night.Editing
No post processing . I don't believe in it. I like the shots to look natural and to look like what I saw with my eyesIn my camera bag
I have a new canon 6D with a Rokinon Wide Angle 2.8 14mm, Canon ultrasonic 75-300, Canon 50 mmFeedback
When shooting the Aurora dress warm and have a spare battery in your pock or close to your body The cold is hard on battery life. I'm shooting in temperatures anywhere from - 25 to -45. Make sure you have a good tripod and always have something in the picture with the Aurora. Also get as far as you can from city lights and take lots of pictures. Best start setting are F2.8 at 1600 ISO with wide angle lens set at infinity. Then change F Stops and ISO as needed also I find Auto white balance works fine.
