Location
This photo was taken in Chimney Rock North Carolina around Christmas time. I was there on a photography trip with a friend.Time
It was sometime after 8 in the evening. I waited all day to get just the right shot.Lighting
I don't think this image would have had the same impact if it was during the day or without the lighting. The fluorescent light above have off a nice green glow, while the Christmas lights in the background draw your attention around the rest of the image.Equipment
This shot was taken with a Canon Power Shot SX510 HS with the standard fixed lens. I also used a tripod to keep the camera from moving while taking multiple shots for HDR.Inspiration
It was just an all around great day leading up to that moment. My friend and I spent the whole day there taking photos and experiencing nature. I saw this old rusty gas pump earlier in the day and thought it would make a great night shot with all the Christmas lights.Editing
This was an HDR shot, but I only had 3 images instead of several. I wasn't sure it would be enough until I compiled them in Photoshop. Then just some minor editing. In my camera bag
Since that shot I have upgraded my equipment. I don't always know what I will find when I'm out shooting so I like to have some versatility. I also don't want to carry around a ton of equipment. I carry my Canon SL1 great camera for quickly changing settings. The Canon EF-S 18-200mm lens gives me a pretty good range without constantly changing lenses. A heavy duty gorrillapod has proven very helpful. It's small, light weight, versatile, and some places that won't let you set up a tripod don't have a problem with it. Other than that I carry extra batteries, a grey card for metering, and a basic lens cleaning kit.Feedback
Be patient, something may look great now but amazing in a few hours. I always take more shots than I use. I walk around my subject and try different angles and zoom levels. Sometimes I end up with something unexpected by just taking a minute longer with my subject.
